Вадим, глава нью-йоркского лейбла Segment, собирал материал для сборника «Segmentation» в надежде, что о его участниках узнают в мире. Но, например, в Беларуси хорошо известно творческое детище Вадима — AUTISM, у которого есть сайд-проект DISPOSABLE (больше в сторону clicks-n-cuts и dark ambient). Каждый из этих проектов, впрочем, как и все остальные, представлен на диске двумя треками. В любом случае, сборник получился исключительно полезный и познавательный. «Segmentation» объединил музыкантов из разных стран. Давайте познакомимся с ними поближе. Начнем с минчан. Про AUTISM (и DISPOSABLE) все понятно. AUTISM, как всегда, играет звуками и словами: «Theb Lu Eprin Teater», «Toom Anys Ilverth Oughts». Теперь -ED. Этот музыкант начинал с эмбиента, прошел через увлечение многими стилями. Два трека для сборника взяты с его последнего альбома. Его причудливая электроакустика — музыка, может быть, тяжелая для восприятия неподготовленного человека, но интересная. A. Kowalski живет как бы вне того, что происходит на современной электронной сцене. Корни его музыки имеют нечто общее с такими исполнителями, как PINK FLOYD и Jean Michelle Jarre. А прозрачная гитара на фоне в композиции «White Closer» навевает воспоминания о звучании лейбла «4AD». Два его трека открывают и закрывают сборник. Это отнюдь не архаичные, как вы могли бы подумать, а очень интересные и мелодичные композиции. MILKMAN — еще один проект из Минска. А I/DEX и HARMASH — два проекта одного человека из Новополоцка, тоже очень качественная музыка. Интернациональная часть диска — INBUE и Alec Treecity. INBUE — группа из английского города Ньюкасл. Это дуэт, в который входят молодой продюсер и вокалистка Paris. INBUE играет наиболее «популярную» музыку: в его треках «Pose Tes Yeux» и «Scintilla» смешаны deep house, acid jazz и downtempo, плюс отстраненные, «трансовые» женские вокальные партии. Могут возникнуть ассоциации с OLIVE, MASSIVE ATTACK, PORTISHEAD. Наконец, Alec Treecity — гитарист из Нью-Йорка, который сочиняет довольно психоделические пьесы. Это многослойная ритмичная электроника с высокой интенсивностью звучания. Несмотря на большую продолжительность звучания, сборник слушается легко. Композиции на нем не очень длинные, их почти два десятка, и они действительно разбивают диск на небольшие сегменты. Они разные по настроению, так, музыка INBUE приятная и энергичная, в ней много драйва, а -ED и DISPOSABLE, представляющие экспериментальную часть сборника, порадуют интеллектуалов-интровертов, склонных ко вполне обоснованной мизантропии. Начинается «Segmentation» на очень высокой ноте: «White Closer» (A. Kowalski) и «ComM» (I/DEX) — едва ли не лучшие треки сборника. I/DEX играет мелодичный IDM, а HARMASH погружает в глубокий эмбиент. Общее у этих проектов — какая-то просветленность и романтичность. Чем-то эта музыка мне напоминает творения немецких проектов KREIDLER и CONSOLE. Когда слушаешь I/DEX, то в воображении открывается широкая панорама, с небрежно наброшенной в лучших традициях импрессионизма легкой матовой дымкой. То же сравнение я бы отнес и к AUTISM, но открывающаяся картина становится более эпической и фантастической. Неожиданно жесткие звуковые аксессуары придают ей колючую неприглядность, и делают структуру, так сказать, ячеисто-зернистой при ближайшем рассмотрении. Большое видится на расстоянии. Все пьесы «Segmentation» по-своему одухотворены, и даже когда случаются провалы в мрак и тревогу, на душе все равно светло. Не пугает ни виртуальный «театр жестокости» -ED, ни фабричные звуки MILKMAN (только его короткая композиция «Nobody Home» может слегка шокировать, а может просто оставить неуютное чувство). Потому что все имеет смысл. В каждой вещи чувствуется поиск. А страшно может быть лишь оттого, что идти некуда.
И там же пару слов про Segmentation. И опять послушать можно.

Great selection of quality tracks! The music varies from beautiful ambient to moving electronica. Some tracks are very minimal, others are more melodic and accessible. Label owners Autism present two outstanding moody tracks. I/DEX is very good as usual — dubby and atmospheric. Harmash and –ED bring massive ambient pieces. All of the tracks fit together nicely, to combine a brilliant compilation CD. Highly recommended.

Segment, a New York based electronic label is on the fringe of detailing itself as one of the best kept secrets in the world of mechanical minimalism. On February 10th they unleashed a bombshell of tracks on their first compilation featuring non-traditional forms of electronic music left astray in a field of dust. From the ever hypnotic melodies of Autism’s «Toom Anys Ilverth Oughts,» through Alec Treecity’s (chimey) drum’n bass nostalgia on «Bulb:Beam:Burn,» there’s a sure display of change as you progress from each piece on this disc. A.Kowalski’s ethereal rhythms of «White Closer» combines equal parts textured melodies next to smooth beats, opening this compilation quite well. Harmash’s «Diazepam» compliments the label’s injection of chilled atmospherics and swaying percussion in a way that is pensive, meandering yet very focused.
After 71 minutes of abstraction gone awry, Segmentation isn’t a typical compilation in any sense of the word. Consistently clicking away with its bleeps and shattered electric pulses, Segment Records are slowly but surely etching a path for themselves in a growing genre of left-field electronics.

Experimental electronic music label Segment specializes in «creative digital audio design and unusual sound research». Primarily the home of IDM artist Autism (and his minimalist side project Disposable), Segment has expanded their range of artists with Segmentation, their first compilation. Autism hails originally from Belarus in Eastern Europe, but has lived in Germany, Russia, and currently makes his home in New York where his label is now based. On Segmentation, he’s had the opportunity to expose some more musicians from Belarus to the west, as well as including musicians from other parts of Europe and the US. The result is a varied collection of modern electronic moods, grooves, and experiments that explore the many facets of the ambient techno, ambient house, and minimalist electronic genres.
The stylish, melodic, and moody sounds of Belarusian artist A. Kowalski both open and close the album with White Closer and Loa, and are among my favourites on the CD. Autism himself presents two of his own tracks, the urgent and pulsing Theb Lu Eprin Teater and the complex, clicking, shivering, melodically shifting Toom Anys Ilverth Oughts (from his ((Vibro)) CD, which I reviewed in AI #21-read it here). Alex Treecity, a guitarist and experimental artist from New York contributes a couple of short but effective tracks in Beach Asterisks and Bulb:Beam:Burn, both of which manage to combine experimental structures with melodic sounds.
Belarus’ Harmash (aka Vitaly Harmash) contributes the lush and organic Bolletus Collectanea, the liquid and languid Diazepem. In his alter-ego of I/DEX, he goes more for a kind of rhythmic futuristic sensuality on ComM and Dable_Racor. -ED, possibly the first ambient artist in Belarus (and who still lives in Minsk) gives us two deep, dark, and edgy tracks full of strange organic sounds in Coward and Dive Time. The UK’s Inbue, which is DJ/producer Jay Rudd and vocalist Veronique Perez, offer up two sensuous and exotic pieces. The luxurious Pose tes Yeux features Perez’s dreamy, whispering voice to nice effect amidst the electronics. The upbeat Scintilla is a terrific track of lush techno grooves that has a late night jazz feel to it in parts.
On the more experimental side of things are two tracks from European artist Milkman, the first, Save Me Please, a dark trip of dripping sounds, electronic murmurs and clicking percussion, the other, Nobody Home, a short excursion into a strange, static realm. Autism’s side project, Disposable, also contributes the throbbing Natsnd Inbetween and the backwards tracked ambience of Inward Glider.
If you’re into music like The Future Sound of London and Aphex Twin, you’ll find much to like on this diverse and stimulating collection of electronic music.
